After days of sightseeing in Buenos Aires we took a boat and bus ride to Punta Del Este, Uruguay. To get there I booked both means of transit through Buquebus and the total ride was about 4.5 hours (1 hour boat, 3.5 hours bus). The buses are very comfortable, air-conditioned buses with bathroom but Tip: It can get chilly, bring a long sleeve, and bring snacks!
We stayed at the Golden Beach Resort & Spa which was located on the peninsula and within a few minutes walk from the bus station. The hotel was nice (could have used a little bit of updating) and the rooms were clean and spacious. The hotel had a heated indoor/outdoor pools and breakfast included, so those were nice pluses. Also, location-wise, we were close to the beach and lots of restaurants and shopping.
We took our time these few days to relax and explore. Los Dedos de Punta Del Este (The Finders of Punta Del Este) was our first stop and then a bit of walking to get a lay of the land. Lunches on the water were great all the days we were there, and there were so many restaurants to choose from. One day we walked around the entire peninsula (it doesn’t take more than a half or so) and stopped by the fresh fish markets to catch a glimpse of the sealions that come to eat there. The kids enjoyed seeing them up so close. We contemplated doing a sea lion-watching trip, but we just didn’t have time. It would have been something we would have done if we could. We stopped at one of the beaches for a little bit and were able to rent 2 chairs and an umbrella for about 12$, so that was a nice surprise.
Nights were spent wandering the area, checking out shops and a flea market. Note: Nights got chilly, we needed those long sleeves. There were lots of choices for dinners and we found a great food hall with lots of different choices. It was family-friendly, and it even had a kids play space for the to play in while we finished our meal. Near the flea market there was a street performer for the kids, and we spent time watching his magic show and doing some souvenir shopping.
Overall, the stay in Uruguay was low-key and relaxing which was much needed after so much action the first few days of the trip. Punta Del Esta is very walkable and was a nice place to just kick back for a bit.
