I make sure I try my best to get up to Lake George, NY every year. It doesn’t always happen, but I do try my best. The kids love the lake, the Minnehaha (the steamboat), mini-golf and more…We enjoy the history, i.e., the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, etc. and the mansions on Millionaires’ Row. This is place is definitely the epitome of “something for everyone.”
So how excited was I when I saw on our list the iconic hotel for NY was The Sagamore (actually located in Boltons Landing – like 15 min north of the Lake George Village)! Everyone always sees the grand building from the lake but when we got to stay there it was really a wow experience.
We didn’t get to stay in the main house; we were in one of the many lodges, so the walk was kind of long to get to the main house, but was definitely doable, even with small kids.
Besides the 3 pools (kid pool, adult pool and indoor pool), restaurants on prem, and free tour on their own boat, the huge (about 10,000 sq ft) indoor activity center was just icing on the cake. Not having to worry about what we would do if it rained was a big plus when travelling with small kids. We were able to take advantage of many of their amenities as well as events like the s’mores night with live music, which was also a big hit. There is so much to do you never really have to leave the island!
Tip: If you’re looking to get into Lake George Village for all the fun festivities of summer (of which there are MANY) you’re going to need to drive down, and parking in town can be difficult, so if there are other options, that may be best. We were also there during Americade (a huge week-long motorcycle festival) which made it near impossible to be in town with the crowds. This festival occurs every year so you can check out the town’s website to find out when it will be for that year.
What Makes The Sagamore Iconic?
- The hotel was first built in 1883 and rebuilt 2 more times after fires
- The hotel was the social center for wealthy residents and tourists
- The Sagamore Resort has been named to the Historic Hotels of America Top 25 List
